Schools

Three ways into the water

The same method for all three sports: understand it on the sand first, then practise with your instructor alongside, and finish each day knowing what you have improved.

Standing waist-deep, the instructor pushes a student’s board so she catches the white water

Surf

Conil’s beaches are long and sandy, with waves that break gradually: a good place for your first paddles and for gaining confidence on open faces.

  • First-timers: foam boards in the white water
  • Improvers: reading the wave, turns and paddling out
  • 1.5 h or 2.5 h sessions, set by the tide
  • Board, wetsuit and insurance included

from €40 1.5 h session · sample

Kitesurf

IKO-certified instructors, a radio helmet so you can hear them in the water, and whichever beach takes the day’s wind best.

  • 3-day course (6 h in total) with 2 students per instructor
  • Progression week: upwind, transitions and first jumps
  • We provide kite and bar, board, harness, helmet and vest

Wing foil

A wing in your hands and a board that lifts above the water. It comes quickly if you start calmly and with the right gear.

  • Flat water or small waves
  • Spot chosen by the wind
  • 3 students per instructor, at most
  • Wing, board, foil, wetsuit, helmet and vest
  • 4-day course, single sessions or private lessons

from €85 1.5 h session · sample

Method

What you will learn each day

No day starts in the water: first we look at the sea together, warm up and go over the plan. Then practice with your instructor close by, and a few minutes at the end to talk about how it went.

Surf for first-timers

Foam boards, which float a lot and don’t hurt, in the white water where you can stand.

  1. Reading the beach

Where to go in, where rip currents form and how to fall without hitting the board.

  2. Lying on the board

Where to lie so the nose doesn’t dive, and how to paddle without tiring in five minutes.

  3. The pop-up

We practise standing up on the sand until it comes naturally, adapted to your fitness.

  4. Your first white water

We pick the wave, give you a push and you glide standing up to the shore.

  5. No push needed

You learn to choose the white water yourself, paddle it in time and steer the board with your body.

Surf to improve

A hard mid-length board and unbroken waves. For those who already stand up in the white water.

  1. Getting out back

How to get through the breaking waves by paddling and with a turtle roll or duck dive, depending on your board.

  2. Rules in the water

Who has the wave, how to wait your turn and where to sit so you don’t get in the way.

  3. Green waves

Paddling into the wave before it breaks and standing up on the face, not in the foam.

  4. Your line

First frontside and backside turns, and video to see what to fix.

Kite for first-timers

3 days of 2 hours. By the end you can ride a few metres and, above all, you know when not to go out.

  1. Day 1 · On the sand

How the wind works, the wind window and the power zone. We rig the kit and you practise the safety systems with a small kite.

  2. Day 2 · In the water, no board

You fly the kite in the water, let it drag you back to shore and relaunch it when it drops.

  3. Day 3 · With the board

You put the board on, learn the water start and ride your first runs with your instructor talking to you by radio.

Wing foil

4 days of 1.5 hours. First on a big board without lifting the foil; flying comes at the end.

  1. The wing

How to hold it, how to power it up and how to carry it along the beach without it pulling you.

  2. Kneeling and standing

You ride the big board with a short foil, one way and the other, until you get back to where you started.

  3. First flights

Foot position, body stance and how to lift off for a few seconds and touch down again without falling.

Camps and surf house

Surf and kite camps with a bed two streets from the beach

A camp puts lessons and a bed in one package. You sleep in our surf house, in town, and walk down to the beach with your board.

Whitewashed rooftop of the surf house with two hammocks and wetsuits drying in the sun
Surf house lounge with a linen sofa, a bookshelf and boards hung on the wall
Double room in the surf house with white linen bedding and a window with blue shutters

The surf house

A white two-storey house with three bedrooms (two shared rooms with bunk beds and one double), two bathrooms, a shared kitchen and a rooftop with hammocks where the day ends talking about the waves.

  • Breakfast included
  • Wi-Fi
  • Lockers with keys
  • Bed linen and towels
  • Outdoor shower
  • Board storage
  • Bikes for getting around town
  • 200 m from the beach

The spot

Conil: long beaches, coves and the wind as a companion

Conil de la Frontera faces the Atlantic on the Costa de la Luz, in the province of Cádiz. Right by the town lies Los Bateles beach, wide and golden; to the north, small coves appear between ochre sandstone cliffs, and to the south the beaches run on for kilometres to Castilnovo and El Palmar.

The wind is the boss here. With the levante the sea is usually smooth, and with the poniente the waves come in; every morning we check the forecast and pick the beach that works best for each sport. We never teach kite or wing with offshore wind.

Getting to Conil

  • Jerez airport is about 50 minutes away by car; Seville airport, just under two hours.
  • Regular buses run to Conil from Cádiz, Jerez and Seville. In summer, it is best to leave the car at the edge of town and walk down.

Reviews

What our students say

Example reviews to show how they would look. On a real website, genuine reviews go here, with their authors’ permission.

  • Example review

I arrived without ever having touched a board, and by day three I was catching white water on my own. Best part: they explained the sea before we went in.

    Surf for first-timers · 4 days
  • Example review

I did the five-night kite camp. Perfectly organised: every morning they told us which beach we were heading to, depending on the wind.

    Kite camp · 5 nights
  • Example review

We came with two kids aged 9 and 12. Small groups, lots of patience and the house a short walk from the sand.

    Family surf · 6 days
  • Example review

I had been stuck in the white water for two summers. The video on the last day showed me in one minute what I was doing wrong.

FAQ

What people usually ask before coming

All terms on this website are samples: each school sets its own.

Do I need to be able to swim?

Yes. You don’t need to be a strong swimmer, but you should feel comfortable in water where you can’t stand. If in doubt, tell us and we will give you a private instructor on day one.

What is the minimum age?

Surf: from 8 in kids’ groups and from 14 in adult groups. Kite and wing foil: from 14, with parental consent for minors.

What should I bring?

Swimwear, a towel, sunscreen and a bottle of water. We provide the board, wetsuit, helmet and vest.

When do lessons start each day?

They depend on the tide and the wind, so they change every day. We send you the time the evening before; they usually fall between 9:00 and 13:00 or between 16:00 and 20:00.

Flat sea or a gale: what happens then?

First we try another beach. If none is safe, we move the lesson to another day of your stay and, if that is not possible, we refund that lesson.

How do I book and when do I pay?

Send us your dates and group size, we confirm your place and you pay a 30% deposit. The rest on arrival, by card or cash. (Sample terms.)

Can I change dates or cancel?

Changing dates is free up to 72 hours before. If you cancel more than 10 days ahead, we refund the full deposit; after that, we keep it for a year for another visit. (Sample terms.)

Do I need a car?

Not for surfing: the school and the house are in town and everything is within walking distance. For kite and wing, transfer to the day’s beach is included.
